Kohei Nawa's sculptures “Ho / Oh,” inspired by the Hou-Ou phoenix, are presented for the grand re-opening of the main building of Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store in Osaka, Japan.
The two phoenixes were created using 3D modeling technology, and crafted by the skills of three artisans from Kyoto, specialized in traditional wood carving, lacquer and gold and platinum leaves gilding. The gems on their necklaces have a bamboo fruit shape, which the mythical East Asian phoenix is said to have liked. The wood used for the sculptures is taken from Meiji Shrine camphor trees.
