(THISIS)SHIZEN

(THISIS)SHIZEN, a shop focusing on the bounty of nature and on forms and foods produced from nature by the work of human hands, is opening on the ground floor of ShinPuhKan. Sandwich was responsible for spatial design and art direction.
“Seed”, Kohei Nawa’s sculpture at the center of the shop, was inspired by the panspermia hypothesis, which suggests that life on Earth was seeded by meteorites from out in the Cosmos. Its motifs include organic compounds that are the building blocks of life, spores or seeds, and ova, and it conveys the way that they arrive on Earth through the clouds. As little design as possible was applied to the shop’s interior—utilizing the space as built, with inorganic materials such as mortar, stainless steel, and glass added where necessary to provide functionality.
