KOHEI NAWA

彼岸より

In January 2024, "From the Edge," a performance conceived in collaboration between dancer Min Tanaka and Nawa, co-produced by Sandwich and Madada Inc., was staged at Yamanashi Prefectural Citizen's Culture Hall in Kofu, Yamanashi.
Min Tanaka continues to pursue the relationship between the body and the world through experimental activities that go far beyond the existing stage and theater. One of his activities is the "Hakushu Festival," which used to be held in the village of Yamanashi Prefecture, where the artist is based. While a university student, Nawa participated in this pioneering outdoor art festival in Japan as a volunteer staff member. This experience has had a strong influence on his creative activities.
In this first collaborative work by the two artists, the view of impermanence expressed in Kamo no Chomei's essay "Hojoki" is used as a starting point, connecting to Min Tanaka's ongoing queries about the body, weather, and non-urban spaces. On the stage, while mud and fog fill the space with constantly changing forms, a vulture, which in many cultures is believed to represent death and rebirth, stands as if it transcends time and space. The stage is a "ba ("place")" where ideas and materiality connect, and Min Tanaka's dance accompanies it, leading to a phenomenon in flux. It is a tranquil landscape drawn by waves that go from one shore to another.
