All Stars - RESONANCE
We are pleased to present Soma, Kohei Nawa's solo exhibition at Galerie Vera Munro in Hamburg, Germany.
This exhibition serves as a platform for Nawa to reconstruct past works exhibited in Cell held in 2009 including "Air Cell" and "Dot," while introducing his latest creations "Catalyst," "Plotter," "White Code," "Moment," "Rhythm," "Mol," and "Trans".
The repeated assembly and dispersing of cells that make "soma"—or "body" in Greek—, as they are encoded and decoded between two- and three-dimensional forms and between various materials and techniques, creates a dynamic and ever-changing landscape. This process of transformation, where cells evolve and adapt, gives rise to new materialities and physical sensations, infusing the viewer with a sense of the artwork's energy and dynamism.

The Poet, The Artist and The Pianist
We are pleased to announce Flare, a group exhibition by Kengo Kito, Daisuke Ohba, and Kohei Nawa at Tiger Gallery™, an art gallery project of Onitsuka Tiger in London, UK.
Intertwining multifarious materials, approaches, and concepts, Flare presents works of a cohesive vision that explore the contingencies of contemporary existence as well as grand narratives that harken back to the universe’s origins. The paintings, sculptures, and installations reflect dynamic interplays of space, time, and light, catapulting viewers into a new dimension charged with both paradox and possibility.
In May 2024, while the artists were conceptualizing the current exhibition, a historical solar flare
occurred, attracting great attention as auroras were observed around the world. Serendipitously, a few years prior, they had jointly presented an exhibition titled Taiyo (“Sun”). In contemplating these connections, Nawa proposed the title Flare for the current exhibition as an homage to the celestial spectacle as well as the artists’ interconnected creative journeys. Much like the sun, which channels ancient energies to illuminate the future, Flare addresses the essence and potential of our era, both present and future.

Flare
This fall, "MIRAGE [transitory]," a new performance art piece by Belgian-French choreographer Damien Jalet and sculptor Kohei Nawa, will be presented at the immersive theater THEATER 010 in Fukuoka, Japan.
Their decade-long partnership since 2014 has birthed expressions that transcend the realms of science and myth, sculpture and dance. Expanding the universe of their previous collaborative trilogy, "VESSEL," "Mist," and "Planet [wanderer]," this project enscales their past explorations on a more intimate level. This project will be expanded into a scaled-up version in Switzerland and will tour Europe the following year.
◼︎Concept
The concept of "MIRAGE [transitory]" refers to a visual phenomenon created by the refraction of light by the atmosphere. It is a MIRAGE seen by those wandering the desert of "Planet [wanderer]" in search of themselves, a phantom boundary surface that connects us to somewhere other than here.
This collaboration between the two pushes further to explore the thin and fragile area that straddles opposing concepts—life and death, solid and liquid, ancient and future, harmony and chaos, human and non-human: this search for the boundaries between distinct states becomes a performance itself. Through transformational scenes, various things and matters collide, intertwine, and ultimately melt together. The stage becomes a ‘place of transformation’ where information and matter are fused in an abstract yet emotional way, exposing change being the only constant in the universe.
Conceived like an awaken dream, the piece confront the dancers to various materials, transforming their bodies like the ever-changing weather, or the flora and fauna that undergo constant metamorphosis within them. Set to an hypnotising original score by Thomas Bangalter, Nawa and Jalet embark a very talented group of dancers from different horizons in a fascinating quest of profound transformation, inspired by the ascending spiral of the architecture of the theater itself.

Iris van Herpen - Sculpting the Senses
A new, nearly 5-meter-tall sculpture by Kohei Nawa, Trans-Mio, was revealed at ONE DOJIMA PROJECT, a high-rise tower complex in Dojima, Osaka. "ONE DOJIMA PROJECT" is a facility consisting of the luxury hotel, "Four Seasons Hotel Osaka," and the condominium, "Brillia Tower Dojima". The sculpture will be permanently installed before the entrance of the apartment section.
This work was born from a workshop in the "ULTRA_Sandwich#18" project, a collaboration between Kyoto University of the Arts and Sandwich. Nawa and students experimented with a 3D scan using an iPhone and captured as a motif a casual pose of one of the participants, "Mio," carrying a tote bag and gazing up at the moon floating in the blue sky. This abstract silhouette looking up gives glimpses of a future where space will be more familiar and diffuses them to a city where various information, masses, and materials are intertwined. The surface form, which combines voxel-like volumes with flowing cloud-like masses, will make passers-by crossing through the urban fabric reflect on what reality is.

ONE DOJIMA PROJECT
Somatic Modes of Attention brings artists Bruno Botella, Kohei Nawa, and Robert Platt together in a mélange of works that engages the viewer with a complex and diverse sensory experience. Three artists reveal how we perceive our environment by applying human vision's ambiguous and intuitive nature in their works. In this modern age dominated by logocentric and excessive visual culture, we ask whether alternative "modes of attention" can be generated by our bodies. The transition of things, including light and shadow, requires us to observe slowly and carefully, focusing on the value of the ambiguous aspects of human perception and cognition. Botella, Nawa, and Platt move us away from the universal and clear observation based on data and into a parallel world of phantasmagoria.

Somatic Modes of Attention
Around 100 works by a total of 50 rising and renowned artists from Kyoto will be presented at The Echoes of East Kyoto exhibition held at WHAT CAFE, Tokyo, under the curation of "Onidaimyo (a curatorial unit represented by Kengo Kito / Daisuke Oba / Kohei Nawa)." A wide variety of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works by renowned artists and newcomers will be displayed at one venue to give a more profound experience of Kyoto's art scene.
In recent years, the momentum of young artists in Kyoto has continued to grow and shows no signs of slowing down. Young artists fresh out of university become more vital for the local and a global art scene and are drawing attention. Behind the continued emergence of artists with high potential lies a unique art ecosystem nurtured in Kyoto. This results from the loose vertical and horizontal ties among artists created by the convergence of several art universities and the seepage of art into the city through progressive initiatives such as the ARTISTS' FAIR KYOTO and art hotels and cafes.
This exhibition resulted from a genuine connection between artists that transcended generations and social positions. It will be a rare opportunity to reflect on the resonance of Kyoto's artistic energy on an unprecedented scale in the country's capital.

Hyakunengo Art Festival -Uchiboso Art Festival-
Kohei Nawa's sculpture “PixCell-Tarot Reading (Jan. 2023)” will be presented as a part of a group exhibition Absolute Chairs. The exhibition will take place at Saitama Museum of Modern Art.
This exhibition revolves around the representation of chairs in artworks primarily from the post-war period to the present day. It introduces approximately 70 two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and video works from both Japanese and foreign artists, unraveling the functions and implications of chairs within the domain of art.
