KDDI and Kohei Nawa | Sandwich have developed a new iOS application “AR x ART KOHEI NAWA” that uses the latest AR technology and 5G.

With this application, we aim at offering a new art experience by establishing a method of expression that combines AR technology and art. Using advanced technologies such as LiDAR scanner and Indoor Mapping, we will offer three contents that expand the concept of sculpture.

-“PixCell_AR” transforms objects into “PixCell” in real-time.  (To be released in December 2020 or later.)
-“AR × ART COLLECTION”, enables you to place AR “multiple” works in the real world.
-“White Deer_AR” invites you to an art journey to find “White Deer”.

*This project is part of the “augART” project, jointly promoted by KDDI and The Chain Museum.

Kohei Nawa presents his solo exhibition Oracle at GYRE GALLERY and “Ho / Oh” in the Centennial Celebration of the Establishment of Meiji Jingu from tomorrow, October 23rd.

The current pandemic made international travels problematic, but mostly gave him the opportunity to spend time in the studio and work on a variety of new creations: this show reveals a selection of the pieces born from his latest experimentations, including “Dune”, paintings in which he produced complex materiality and textures by combining multiple art media, paints and oils, and “Blue Seed” using UV lasers and special pigments.

This exhibition coincides with the Centennial Celebration of the Establishment of Meiji Jingu in which Nawa contributes to the special presentations of “Ho / Oh” and “White Deer (Meiji Jingu)”.  “Ho / Oh”, the first contemporary art to be exhibited at “Shinmon”, will be on display until November 3rd starting from tomorrow.  Please come and enjoy visiting it together with “White Deer (Meiji Jingu)”, which will be exhibited until December 13th.

The special exhibition of Kohei Nawa’s sculptures “Ho / Oh”, a carved and acquired wooden sculpture, will be displayed at the South Gate of the Meiji Shrine as a part of the 100th anniversary of the Meiji Shrine’s enthronement. A particular detail are the gems on the phoenix’s necklaces that have a bamboo fruit shape, which the mythical East Asian phoenix is said to have liked. The wood used for the sculptures is taken from Meiji Shrine camphor trees. Also, the sculpture “White Deer (Meiji Jingu)” is on exhibit at the entrance of the Meiji Jingu Museum.

Oracle1

Kohei Nawa presents a solo exhibition Oracle at GYRE GALLERY, Tokyo, Japan.

As an homage to the Kamakura-Period sculpture Kasuga Shinroku Shari Zushi, Nawa will display “Trans-Sacred Deer (g/p_cloud_agyo)” – also known as Kumojika – produced using woodcarving, urushi lacquer, and gold and platinum leaf techniques. This work is part of a project that Nawa has been developing for a few years, and aiming at promoting traditional crafts in Kyoto years. The current pandemic made international travels problematic, but it mostly gave him the opportunity to spend time in the studio and work on a variety of new creations: this show reveals a selection of the pieces born from his latest experimentations, including paintings in which he produced complex materiality and textures by combining multiple art media, paints and oils as well as new works using fog and UV lasers.

Also, GYRE’s atrium features the sculpture installation “Silhouette”, a work that was developed for pianist Koki Nakano’s concert stage in Spiral Hall in Tokyo and ROHM Theatre Kyoto in 2018. Revolving bodies made of curves extracted from melodic sound determine the volumes, while highly reflective silicon carbide beads cover the surface “skin”.

The exhibition coincides with the Centennial Celebration of the Establishment of Meiji Jingu to which Nawa contributes with special exhibitions of “Ho / Oh” and “White Deer (Meiji Jingu)”. These sculptures mark the way from Omotesando to the main shrine and represent hope for a new future.

(THISIS)SHIZEN, a shop focusing on the bounty of nature and on forms and foods produced from nature by the work of human hands, is opening on the ground floor of ShinPuhKan. Sandwich was responsible for spatial design and art direction.
“Seed”, Kohei Nawa’s sculpture at the center of the shop, was inspired by the panspermia hypothesis, which suggests that life on Earth was seeded by meteorites from out in the Cosmos. Its motifs include organic compounds that are the building blocks of life, spores or seeds, and ova, and it conveys the way that they arrive on Earth through the clouds. As little design as possible was applied to the shop’s interior—utilizing the space as built, with inorganic materials such as mortar, stainless steel, and glass added where necessary to provide functionality.
